Introduction to core Welsh health datasets in SAIL and the application process

This first session is aimed at individuals interested in applying for access to linked core health datasets within the SAIL Databank Trusted Research Environment (TRE).

Course description

This first session is aimed at individuals interested in applying for access to linked core health datasets within the SAIL Databank Trusted Research Environment (TRE). These sessions of the Dataset Users Webinar Series are themed around the six most popular Welsh health datasets: Patient Episode Database for Wales (PEDW), Welsh Longitudinal GP dataset (WLGP), Welsh Demographic Service (WDS), Annual District Death Extract (ADDE), Emergency Department Dataset (EDDS), Outpatient Database for Wales (OPDW).

Who should attend

Anyone who is interested in applying for access to linked health data in SAIL

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the strengths and limitations in each of the core health datasets in the context of population data science research
  • Understand the SAIL Databank application process including the different stages involved and the type of support available, such as the scoping form and Independent Governance Review Panel (IGRP) process.
  • Apply best practices and strategies for preparing a successful IGRP application, including hints and tips from former internal reviewer.
  • Acquire practical insights into leveraging core health datasets for research purposes within a Trusted Research Environment.

Datasets

  • Patient Episode Database for Wales (PEDW)
  • Welsh Longitudinal GP dataset (WLGP)
  • Welsh Demographic Service (WDS)
  • Annual District Death Extract (ADDE)
  • Emergency Department Dataset (EDDS)
  • Outpatient Database for Wales (OPDW)

Transferrable skills

  • General research skills in applying and utilising linked datasets held in TREs
  • Communication skills by engaging in meaningful discussions with peers and experts.
  • Problem-solving through navigating data application procedures.
  • Collaboration through interactively sharing insights and using collective knowledge to address common challenges.
  • Time management through task prioritisation to complete data application processes successfully.
